Love artichokes.   Big treat when someone remembers to buy one.

Chow down, scraping the artichoke meat off the "leaves",   finally getting
to the heart.

Good stuff.

Ahem...

I am rethinking - um...attempting to develop a way to effectively say
that I was...er...."incorrect"...no, that's not the word - mistaken -
yeah, mistaken in my belief that I could hit a golf ball further with
a baseball bat than with a golf club.

I'm sure that, Obama like, I can rephrase my original assertion in
such a way that what I was really saying was that I couildn't hit a
golf ball further with a baseball bat than a golf club while not
admitting that I was mistaken about being able to do so leaving the
impression that indeed I could hit a golf ball further with a baseball
bat than a golf club only I can't.

I'll figure it out  eventually.  :>)

That's not far off the mark. But, worse, for McCain is that he keeps
claiming he hasn't said what he has said, and he's running a dirty
campaign, which he said he would not do. Typical Bush-Rove crap, all
over again.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

If America is at least partially over its racism, Obama will win. If
Obama were white, he'd win in a landslide, But because he ain't, it'll
be close. But Obama will win.

McCain has absolutely nothing to offer. You can tell that by the
"attack" campaign commercials he is running right now.

McCain needs a new slogan. How about:

"There is no hope." - John McCain.

They talked about the Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.
Seems this spot has the first returns on the presidential vote and
the17eligible voters claim a 75% success rate in picking a new president.

I wouldn't go to a rec.boats "reunion" unless I could open carry my Sig

Seriously, I'll be watching closely for the Virginia returns. If Obama
carries Virginia, the outcome of the election will be known. If he loses
Virginia, we'll have to stay up a little later.

You can tell how desperate McCain is by the sniping remarks and attack
commericals he is running.

This week, McCain had another skin cancer removed. I think it
reasonable, since he has had more than one bout with cancer, for him to
be examined by a nationally known oncologist who will release a report
on that aspect of his health.

The 'longest' home run was no more than 650 feet, and that's being most
generous. It was probably less than 550 feet. That's less than 225 yds,
which ain't squat for one who can hit a decent drive. Hell, Lorena Ochoa,
at about 130lbs, regularly pounds them beyond 280 yards.

No wonder you can't hit the green on a par 3. 650 feet = 216 yards, 550
feet = 183 yards.

I sure as hell couldn't, but I can hit clays in flight...or even when
they are rolling fast on the ground!

200 yards is a lot farther out than I shoot, since I don't mess around
much with rifles. At the standard pistol range distance of 25 yards,
though, I regularly shoot 4" groups *off-hand* with a 9mm semi-auto, and
if I try hard, I can shoot even tighter groups. At "defensive ranges," I
can do a bellybutton group, which, I suppose, would be the equivalent of
1 MOA with a good rifle at 100 yards!

I've never had an affinity for rifles. Dunno why. When I go out shooting
with my buddies, they usually want to shoot my handguns and I get to
shoot their rifles. Fair trade. My favorite rifle is a Swedish Mauser in
6.5x55 mm.  Not much recoil, and damned accurate.

I've never shot one, but I've heard good things about it as a solid
all-purpose rifle.

My personal all-around bestest rifle is a older Winchester lever
action that was rechambered and re-barreled to .325 with iron sights.
Custom match ammo and that rifle is as accurate at a laser.

Are you referring to the semi-auto Ljungman? Not one of my favorites. I
prefer the old reliable bolt action swedish mauser for 6.5x55 rounds.

Yessir, I was. i dont' have a bolt Swede, but the Ljungman is an
amazing machine. When loading that first round into the chamber, it's
so fascinating watching all those parts sliding around. brilliant
design. then the Egyptiand decided to copy it and make the "HAKIM"
chambered in 30-06 and really kind of butchered the design IMHO.

But harry, i have a couple of 7.5x55 Swiss "Straight pulls"  For
military arms, they are absolute works of art. Especially for their
time period they are perfect specimens of Swiss machining.

Extreme accuracy, too!

If I were buying a rifle, I'd want one of the Swedish Mausers or, if I
were buying a new rifle, I'd buy one of the modern knock-off with
"Mauser action." In anything larger than .22LR, I prefer bolt action.

But I am really more into pistols. Here's a target from my day with a
semi-auto shooting .40S&W, 25 yards, offhand.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b287/hank100/Miscellaneous/40-0004.jpg

I shoot .22LR with a nice old Victor:

and also a Ruger, and I shoot competitively with this work of art:

It's a 9mm Sig Sauer X-5, wearing its everyday grips. It came with a
pair of beautiful wood grips, but I'm wary of scratching them, so I put
the black grips on it. 19-shot mag, one in the pipe = 20 rounds and
amazingly accurate.

Excellent choices. i agree. To me a 22 revolver or bolt action boring.
But one of the nicest pistols I've ever shot was my brothers Walther
PPK in .22. The top of the slide is V-shaped with a little dot on the
far end. No back sight. you eye lines through the V  down the slide to
the dot. If I may candidly use the phrase, it's one io the most fun
"point 'n shoot" pistols I've had the pleasure of working with.

The PPKs have a long and colorful history, far beyond the "Bond" novels,
and make a great pocket gun if you like to pocket or conceal carry
semi-autos.

But he'll act like he does!! Remember him trying to tell everyone here
that he played guitar? Then he made one of the dumbest statements
about playing that I've ever heard?!

That would fall under the off (or on) topic categories which cause severe
complaining from the complain department.

Sure.  Is it nicer than my Yamaha CG111C?

The newest on is different, altogether.  I am working on something that I'll
share if it comes out right.

I have a Yamaha Acoustic.  Not sure how it compares with the "Classical
Line",  but I'll tell you, it's an excellent guitar for under 300 bucks.  I
have a few other 6 string acoustics ....  a Taylor, a Fender, a Takamine,
and a "no-name" something.   The Taylor is nice and has a distinctive sound.
The Fender I really don't care for.  It sounds "dead".  Fender makes some
great electrics, but I am not impressed with the acoustic ... at least the
one I have.    The Yamaha is a well balanced, very playable guitar with nice
sound.  I keep it here at my desk as my "practice" guitar for keeping the
fingers hard and learning new tunes.

I have played a few fender acoustics, I never liked the feel.. I love
my Takamine 12 string though. The wife's ovation is nice too. Mostly I
play my Martin Backpacker, and my special guitar which a few of you
have seen...

Not with that little Sig you don't. Probably not even with a rifle or target
pistol. You are so full of shite it's coming out of your ears.

But then again, that would depend on what stage of flight you're
talking about, Tom, after it gets whacked? or while its suspended in
front of you  BEFORE it gets "whacked"?

Let's say any where along it's flight path.

I ask because I've seen it done - once by a guy with a .325 Winchester
match rifle and another time by the same guy with a .357 revolver.

I don't have the reflexes any more to even think about actually
accomplishing the feat, but back in the day, I wish I had thought of
trying it.  :>)

Guys that can do that kind of thing (And I know they're out there) are
way out of my league.

This guy shoots a Baretta shotgun amazingly. he does a number on golf
galls to, but they're not up to speed.

Now *that* might get you a few hundred more yards!

There's a big difference between a baseball and a golf ball.  Although,
I'd still bet on the club.

The loft of a golf club puts backspin on the ball which lowers the
pressure above the ball, and raises it below it. This tends to hold
the ball up and make it go farther. This is called the Magnus effect.
It works much better with a dimpled ball, which will go aboout twice
as far as a smooth one.

Sure that not the "Mr. Magoo Effect?"
Always think of him when golf comes up.
Don't know why, just do.

The wager is a golf ball hit from a baseball bat and a club - not a
baseball.
