I suppose if you were considering the installation of a Raymarine/Autohelm
autopilot you might go with the ST40 as it can be interfaced to the
autopilot so that the pilot can steer to a wind angle rather than a magnetic
heading.
Otherwise I doubt you will find a definitive answer as to which one is the
best wind instrument so I think you might consider purchasing the one that
can be serviced in Italy under warranty or after the warranty has expired.
Marco,
I completely agree with Gordon but on one small point. Botht the
Raymarine 1000 and the Simrad Tiller pilot will accept NMEA data.
I would look at the display of each to decide which I found easier to
read.
You can pull the manuals for both of the websites.

That's where I always start.

many thanks for answers!
i think that raymarine has more assistence in Italy,
but you have to consider the fact that i buy the item in USA, so, i've
no warranty on it, only replacement part.
anyway the fact that make me confused is the display: does the navman
is more user friendly? from the shoots it seems to be larger than
raymarine one..

So the Navman wind instrument ouputs wind direction in NMEA format? I've
not checked the specs so I don't know if this is the case.
Also, when you say these autpilots will accept NMEA data are you sure they
will understand NMEA wind direction data, assuming there is such a thing?
Certainly they accept NMEA data from a GPS to allow them to steer to a
waypoint but I'm not so sure about other types of NMEA data.
Marco
As far as the display sizes go I've not looked at the specs but I guess the
Navman could be larger than the ST40 since the ST40 is not the
top-of-the-line Raymarine wind instrument. I have the old ST50 on my boat
and I have no trouble reading it from 2 or 3 metres away. I think it is
about the same size as the Navman.
Could you not purchase the ST40 from the UK? That might allow you to get
some warranty service more easily than if purchased from a US dealer. I
thought Raymarine had worldwide warranty service? You may have to ship it
back to the UK but most of us have to ship our units somewhere to get them
serviced.

I did some checking and I see there is a NMEA output for wind speed and
direction. So you just have to determine whether or not the autopilot can
interpret this.
