I am going to be replacing an old GPS unit on my Sea Ray 215 EC and adding a fixed mount VHF radio. Are there any guidlines to consider with placement of the GPS and VHF with respect to each other, and of course, both with respect to the compass? I am thinking about a through mount on the helm below the steering wheel, either to port/ starboard whichever is best. The GPS would be mounted on a bracket almost directly above the VHF. My compass is on top of the bulkhead. What about wiring? I have two batteries, so a direct VHF connection to the battery is not an option. If you'r not sure, an easy way to check it out is to run temporary wires to both units (keep the wires away from the compass), and power them up. Don't forget to try transmitting on the VHF to see what happens. You shouldn't connect the units directly to the batteries, they'd have power applied to them all the time. The best bet is to go to the panel, this way the battery switch will kill power to the units when you turn it off, and power will come from the battery you select with the switch. John I would also try to isolate the GPS as well, particularly if it has a speaker of any kind. In general I try to isolate all my electronics to the extent possible. If for no other reason than to minimize the collateral damage from any problem with any one of them.
