Cleaning ropes26 Feb 2010 01:20 GMT24
I am working my way through winter maintenance and am now on to cleaning
ropes, the first time in several years for many of them. It is easy where
they are easily removed, but a large part of my running rigging consists of
3 'single line reefing' lines, which go through a number ...

The saddest thing about washing your ropes is the morons who discuss it on
Usenet and think us real sailors won't realize they are pretenders.

The new world record holder for the biggest freshwater fish is the
Giant Mekong catfish (Pangasius gigas). The biggest one ever captured
and measured was caught in Thailand in May of 2005.  http://e-fishingnews.com/amazing/196

I get so disgusted . . .24 Feb 2010 22:09 GMT23
I read sailing newsgroups and I get so disgusted with them. The majority of
discussion seems to center on things like dehumidifiers, electrical
generators, air conditioning, shower stalls, refrigerators, deck washdown
pumps, pet safety, rugged laptops, electric capstans, diesel ...

Yes, I said it! This place has degenerated to a level of discourse equal to
that found in your average kindergarten.

Concordia Sinks22 Feb 2010 02:08 GMT-
A sad day, Concordia has sunk.
Here is an article published in the Montreal Gazette that describes the
situation.  I am sure that more information will come to light once the
crew makes it home.
It's the AMERICAS Cup.19 Feb 2010 08:32 GMT19
Since it's the Americas Cup Challenge I think outsiders (those not based in
the Americas) should not be allowed to compete.
Why should the Americas Cup be allowed into foreign hands. Those dastardly
New Zealanders, I hear tell, even destroyed the original Americas Cup and a
USA 17 - faster downwind than the wind?18 Feb 2010 20:18 GMT46
On the d/w leg of the America's Cup #33, race 1, USA 17 (Oracle) took 63
minutes to cover the 20 nautical mile downwind course, in measured wind
conditions of 5-10 knots.  So, superficially, on velocity made good to
wind direction, it went downwind at about twice (or more) the ...
