This NG has is going through challenging times. Where once it was the predominant boating NG populated by many industry experts, it has now become little more than an off-topic chatroom. Most of truly knowledgeable have long since abandoned this forum for saner climes.

| nutcase of a son-in-law | 31 Jan 2006 18:13 GMT | 29 |
I got a son-in-law who is a little bit disillusioned. He thinks he can go out and buy a 40' sailboat and sail it to the big island of Hawaii. He's never been on a sailboat, much less sailed one. He's a plumber, makes good money, and plans to spend around $200K for

| MP3 Players/Accessories for Boat Use? | 31 Jan 2006 07:07 GMT | 31 |
Anyone using their iPODs on their boats? IF so, are you playing through an existing stereo system, or through one of the newer car/boat dash stereos with an MP3 player input, or...just hooking up to external iPOD speakers?

Forgot to mention that at the fishing gear show I recently attended, a local artist was displaying some of her wares, and I thought they were very nice and nicely priced. I have no connection with the artist. Here's a URL. Worth a look.

| Keep VHF Radio Antenna At Least 1 Meter Away From Our Heads? | 30 Jan 2006 20:14 GMT | 28 |
I have just received a ICOM fix-mounted VHF radio. To my surprise, its instruction says that I must keep the bottom of the radio antenna at least 1-meter (3.3 feet) away from our heads if the antenna is mounted in a small boat. I have never heard this before. Is this for real?

| PFD makes the difference in a hypthermia situation?? | 30 Jan 2006 19:21 GMT | 14 |
The guy without the pfd probably used up too much body heat trying to stay afloat. Even with a full fledged response within 4 minutes of the report, our cold PACNW waters claimed another life. Always a sad and tragic event.

Once the weather breaks I have a ton of work to do before we launch. 1. Rip out cockpit carpeting and install new carpeting. 2. Install new helm seat and pedestal. 3. Install second battery and A/B switch.

| Better earphones for iPods? | 29 Jan 2006 16:33 GMT | 36 |
What earphones are you using on your MP3 players? The ones that came with my iPod (minipods that stick in the edges of the ear canal) aren't bad soundwise, but there are more expensive little pods out there. Incredibly expensive, in some case. Anyone purchased any

| Outboard String | 29 Jan 2006 12:48 GMT | 2 |
I came across a chart guide description referring to moorings and an "outboard string." What's an outboard string and how does one use it? I'm picturing a line in the water for several smaller boats to tie off to,
