insulating icebox with Thinsulate22 Dec 2003 18:25 GMT3
Does anyone have experience using 3M thinsulate material in
conjunction with foam to insulate an icebox / cooler?  I am rebuilding
a 26ft Haida sailboat and, as space is at a premium, I am trying to
reduce the thickness of the insulation needed around the icebox.

Would this boat be OK for a first time builder ?
Let me qualify that a bit.
I'm a pretty good hobby woodworker (cabinets, furniture, etc.) but I'm down
Gelcoat scratches21 Dec 2003 17:09 GMT1
Oops. I was working on sanding my teak and let the sander hit the gel coat a
couple of times. Very light scratches, but noticeable. Think I can wet sand
them out? What grit should I use? If that won't work, any other suggestions?
vacuum bagging hull21 Dec 2003 02:15 GMT7
There is no technical reason why it cannot be done. There is however a need
for enough people to cope with the job.It would be useful to know how big
the hull in question is.
Ther is also the question of why you would mix E-glass and polyester
Adding Decks and Lockers21 Dec 2003 01:25 GMT3
What would you do to add fishing decks and storgae lockers to an aluminum
boat?
Weight is an issue since the boat is intended for shallw water exploration.
An extra inch of draft might make the difference between getting into a back
Icebreaking skiff?20 Dec 2003 23:11 GMT9
Any thoughts/experience with a hull shape or material for getting through
small-scale ice?   We have about a mile to travel; occasionally a skim of
ice forms overnight (OK, today it was more than a skim).
We've always used a 14x4' flatbottomed skiff, of ply/epoxy, lots of glass

Can this be done ?
If yes, who has done it?
Thank you.

Can anyone recommend a design?
I want to build a boat my wife and I can row with our whole family aboard.
It is a large family - 2 adults, 5 children (ranging from new-born twins to
8 years) and 2 dogs of 20kg each.  So we need a rowing boat carrying almost
What to do after removing carpet20 Dec 2003 04:28 GMT11
I have a 24'  1977 Sea Ray with a really awful carpet which needless to say
has seen better days.  I am in the process of sprucing up my boat and one of
the things I want to do is to remove the carpet and put a more user friendly
coating on the decking.  Something that will stand up ...

Which teak seam calk?19 Dec 2003 04:25 GMT17
Rutu' teak decking will have about 1,100 lineal feet of seams.  Based on
the manufacturers' coverage figures that will require 4 gallons or 60
cartriges of caulk.
The candidates with estimated cost for Rutu's decks are:

working dory paint 18 Dec 2003 08:53 GMT17
Greetings to the group,
I'm building a dory from a John Gardner book.  It is a simple swampscott
tender model.  I have done a ocean of research on these craft and have yet
to come across a description of the paint color scheme.  All the pretty
Anyone strip plank an old carvel hull?17 Dec 2003 19:03 GMT1
I came across an interesting idea, take a regular old carvel planked boat,
remove the planks, cut them into strips and reattach using this method.
But only do this to the area under the waterline. Has anyone ever reused
planks this way? I wonder how long would it take to refashion ...
Info wanted on Nonsuch17 Dec 2003 17:21 GMT3
The best boat I've ever sailed in my life has to be the Nonsuch 26'
Classic.  I love all the Nonsuch boats.  I want all the information
you can give me regarding any Nonsuch.  I want to know where used ones
are located, I want to know where to go for information, and I want to
