Chem bond with cured epoxy30 Nov 2005 22:28 GMT8
Sometimes you have to apply new epoxy to older cured epoxy resulting in
a "secondary" bond held only with mechanical interlocking to surface
roughness.  Is there any way to de-cure just the surface of epoxy so
you can get a chemical bond?
gelcoat30 Nov 2005 18:11 GMT2
So, I've used one of the little repair gelcoat repair kits and
matching color was fun.
Is it also possible to get gelcoat as a paint, a form you can spray or
roll over old gelcoat, hopefully filling in little cracks and such?
Pretty but unsailable30 Nov 2005 05:55 GMT14
Yesterday, i was in Orlando for a crew regatta for my sons crew team
and walked over to a marina next door.  It was Lake Fairview Marina on
Lake Fairview in Orlando. They had a shelter under which were several
handmade boats including a Stevenson Projects "Weekender" that was a
drinking water tank29 Nov 2005 21:56 GMT7
Can I make a potable water tank with FG/epoxy or does it need to be
lined w/ something? I have an odd space I'd like to store water in and
an not sure of the need for a liner. If I need one, any ideas of how
to make an odd shape that can still be accessed for the occational
Burnished vs. Polished Bronze29 Nov 2005 16:28 GMT5
I have some deck hardware / fittings that are 'burnished' bronze, and
others that are 'polished' bronze (the difference being the latter have
a more finished/shiny/polished appearance - the former look like they
were simply plopped out of the mold).
how to stop rocking29 Nov 2005 02:49 GMT1
You need flopper stoppers , these are used all over the world mainly by
commercial fishermen .

bedding deck hardware and portlites?28 Nov 2005 18:25 GMT4
Ahoy, when I removed my portlites and deck hardware there was some
dirty, still mostly pliant type of yellow/white putty under
everything. It was easy to get off and I didn't see signs of leaking
anywhere below. It wasn't adhesive so I guess all that's holding
Refurbished Sailboat tracebility26 Nov 2005 15:52 GMT1
One of the trend now in Canada is refurbishing of boats that have been write
off by the insurance companies after big storms in the US.
Entrepreneurs are going in the US and they buy write off sailboats.  They
bring them into Canada to refurbished them.  Then they are sold at the
Jet Ski overheating problem25 Nov 2005 16:44 GMT345
The last time I rode my Jet Ski it gave me a problem
with overheating. The cause is that there wasn't much
of a stream of water running through it to cool it. The
stream from the outlet hole was very inconsistent, and
ughh,.. how do you cut stainless steel plate?25 Nov 2005 10:11 GMT10
It's 1/8in plate, dull and greasy, probably 304. I buggered the
bandsaw blade, then two "hardened carbide, blah, blah" jig saw blades,
a file, a diamond file, then got a beefy angle grinder and gouged
grooves in it and forced it through what was left of the bandsaw metal
disposable power tools24 Nov 2005 15:21 GMT23
I know that boatbuilding subjects tools to much more wear than the
average homeowner gives his power tools but I now have:
Dead Craftsman sabre saw
Dead B&D sander
Dry Power Wood24 Nov 2005 15:09 GMT11
I was inspecting  ribs on my 1942 83 footer and noted that the planking
looked great from inside.  Using a knife I was able to scrape across the
wood and fine powder was generated quickly.  Again,  the wood looked good
but turns to powder quickly when scraped.

question: using epoxy with aluminum23 Nov 2005 12:47 GMT12
I have an aluminum casting which has broken.  Does anyone have any
experiences or recommendations on the likelyhood of success, glueing
it back together with epoxy?  I have West System on hand, and can
fairly easily get other products (e.g. Aluminax).  Any tips,
