Define "Protected Waters".
So many boats/Plans that I see say "For Protected Waters".
Does this mean extremely calm?......Does a lake qualify by virtue of it's
being a lake?....Lake Erie is a lake, and look how it eats boats.....
New Rigging .. where do I go to get it ???14 Jan 2006 13:03 GMT5
A boat I am interested in will need new rigging.  Forestay, backstay,
shrouds, and the hardware that goes with the wire.  Turnbuckles, etc.
What process should I follow to replace the rigging?  What supplier is the
best to deal with?  What measurements etc do I need to know?

Could someone tell me the correct way to go about doing this with a
retro fitting interior [temporary] support in a fiberglass cruising sailboat13 Jan 2006 16:43 GMT1
Is anyone familiar with a boat of the above type that has been
retrofitted with posts/beams, or something comparable, to provide
additional intermittent support for enhanced offshore cruising safety ?
That is, the boat was fit with some kind of supports and/or connecting

green ash or white oak for the ribs.  Can I steambend and use the pine
I have left over from making the stringers?
I can get red oak.  Would this be any better than pine for the ribs?

Anyone want to recommend a good wooden sailboat to build?12 Jan 2006 15:11 GMT3
I'm looking for a trailer sailer, likely 16-18'.
I've read a bit about the Hartley sailboats, but I'd like some people's
opinions before starting down the long path of building a sailboat.
It's for use on local lakes and rivers, mailnly for weekned trips, and

(To skip my long windedness you can jump directly to the
four numbered questions at the bottom. Thanks!)
We have, as some of you may recall, a 1958 Chris Craft

changing points on small outboard?11 Jan 2006 21:06 GMT5
bought a small outboard last week, johnson 4 horse two cyllinder 2
stroke probably from the late 70's/early 80's by the look of it.  This
one has the throttle on the body of the motor.  gave it a compression
test and things look fine, but its a bastard to start and runs a little
Repair/refinish 1979 Old Town fiberglass canoe11 Jan 2006 14:37 GMT1
I picked up a 1979 16' Old Town Laker that needs some lovin'. The hull
is still in fairly good shape but needs a nice refinishing (I'm open to
any refinishing techniques). I'm going to be putting on new decks,
gunwales and seats to a tune of $100, so I'd like to keep
Looking for a used trailer hitch.11 Jan 2006 01:55 GMT8
And I don't want to buy a new one, because I am pretty
sure there are decent used ones out there. Except, none
of the wrecking yards or breakers in my area have one,
and if I ordered a used one off the internet, by the time
waterjet canoe10 Jan 2006 23:52 GMT2
I just went to the Houston Boat Show.  Saw a sneak boat and a canoe
that had small motors, like lawnmower, connected to a small water pump
under the stern.  Hand start the motor and turn cover on the pump for
direction.  Picked up information and then lost it on the way home.
