What is best way to lay down 2 pieces of cloth over wood?29 Jun 2008 17:24 GMT5
This question is from a complete newbie and may be very dumb.
I have a piece of wood that I want to cover with  6 oz  cloth, using
epoxy with slow hardener.
I have enough epoxy & cloth to cover it twice (actually 3 or 4
3M 5200 Bottom28 Jun 2008 17:17 GMT4
I have frequently used 5200 to seal joints when restoring and building wood
boats.  Many ads for used boats state that the boat has a 5200 bottom..
I contacted 3M for information on the process and they replied that 5200 was
used in many marine applications but they knew nothing of ...
Maintenance of Wood28 Jun 2008 16:57 GMT1
My main hatch and forward are made out mahogany and Plexiglas.  We had
them installed several years ago.  At that time, the builder had
sanded and varnished them.  We have not taken care of it until this
year.  We plan on sanding it this year and instead of using varnish we

Any good DVD instructional videos for fiberglassing with epoxy?27 Jun 2008 17:29 GMT6
I know absolutely nothing about fiberglassing, but would like to
learn.  I got some books from the library, but they were all written
in the 60's and 70's, with 1 from 82.
What I would really like is an up-to-date  dvd, or series of
Iain Oughtred's Ness Yawl - professional builders?25 Jun 2008 04:49 GMT18
Hi,
I am now trying to find someone to build a Ness Yawl for me. There will
be a bit of modifications as the boat is intended for cruising in the
Ionian Sea area. Of course the builder I am looking for should be rather
Who sells CRC zinc paint in USA?23 Jun 2008 15:03 GMT13
I have a steel plate that I want to protect from rust,
permanently.  I was told that the best way was to hot-dip galvanize
it.  I've searched  high and low in a 50-mile radius (and then some)
but can't find a place that will do it.
Hydraulic Mechanic Needed - Annapolis Area21 Jun 2008 18:59 GMT1
Hiya all.  I have a smallish manual pump used as a centerboard lift in
a '70 Tartan 37 - Hood designed.
It operates the cbd via a quadrant and wire rope pennant below the
floor board.  The pump, a manual one, is by Commercial Shearing of
Cruising Alaska14 Jun 2008 16:09 GMT1
I have crossed the Gulf of Alaska 43 times. From Seattle to Dutch
Harbor, and Seattle to King Cove. The scariest time was in a 50 foot
Purse Seiner on its maiden voyage. It was just purchased by the
Captain/Owner who I fished for that season in King Cove. Since I am
Best glue for plywood in damp environment?11 Jun 2008 02:28 GMT13
I need to build a base plate (25x25") out of regular exterior
plywood that will be a total of 3" in thickness.
It will be in a damp (not wet) and dark environment, under the
center  of a gazebo, about 1 foot off the ground.
sealing plywood end grain?11 Jun 2008 02:03 GMT17
a stitch and glue kayak made from lauan ply (the cheap doorskin/non
waterproof). Kept under cover in the mild southern california coastal
climes. Showing delam in the areas where the ply has extensive exposure  to
end grain (cockpit coaming, hatches). Also occasional  splits on ...
Structural folds or creases - Aluminum10 Jun 2008 19:29 GMT6
I have been looking at aluminum boats for the last couple years now with an
eye towards how they are built.  I have noticed a lot of them will have 'V's
folded or stamped into the hull along the length for strength.  I don't see
anyway that a backyard builder could do this ...
Fixin the MiniCup spars08 Jun 2008 19:39 GMT6
The original plans for the MiniCup calls for a 1/4-20 u-bolt to join
the gaff and boom so they can move relative to each other.
Unfortunately, the boom's thin metal has torn (after 4 yrs of use) so
the were going to separate.  So, I got a piece of 2X4 and cut it to
Aluminum bottom anti fouling08 Jun 2008 16:37 GMT11
I have a small aluminum boat that I use to get from my half tide dock to
my mooring.  When the summer rains are heavy and a lot of fresh water is
flowing into the harbor (north Atlantic) the slime build up on the
bottom can reach 1-1/2 inches thick.
Lube Oil Monitor "bottles" Mercruiser04 Jun 2008 14:43 GMT2
I have twin Bravo I drives with Merc drive lube monitors.  The plastic
bottles were replaced about 8 years ago and are again leaking,
probably around the combination hose connection/low oil switch wires.
Anyone have a suggestion for a substitute for the factory bottles?  I
