| help! my varnish has pimples,.. | 31 Jan 2005 17:30 GMT | 18 |
Hi, new varnisher here. When I brush it on carefully, I can see tiny gas bubbles forming in the wake of the brushstroke. Most of them pop but some do not and others seem to form during the drying process. The more I try and brush it out the worse it gets. The unhappy result is a

| Nylon vs polyester cordage | 31 Jan 2005 05:33 GMT | 6 |
I know conventional wisdom decrees that running rigging use polyester cordage and anchor line use nylon. The nylon is said to stretch more, and thus take up shock loads more readily. Polyester, on the other hand, stretches less and is said to make setting the sails easier. I can

| Is your Raymarine 2KW radome corroded? | 29 Jan 2005 05:18 GMT | 15 |
"Lionheart" has just received her third Raymarine 2KW radome because Raymarine couldn't save the corroded guts of numbers 1 and 2. It seems to happen every year. The dome is NOT sealed, but has only 4 screws holding the top to the bottom with a sort-of rubber seal between the ...

| Great Loop distances | 29 Jan 2005 04:42 GMT | 16 |
How long might it take to deliver a boat from Baltimore, Maryland to Makinaw Island (right between Lakes Michigan and Huron) assuming one wasn't in a big hurry, but didn't plan to stop at all the attractions? We would go via the Hudson, Erie Canal, Trent-Severn, Georgian Bay.

| weird clicking noises when boat motionless | 28 Jan 2005 08:06 GMT | 22 |
Whenever my boat's at anchor or in slip at night, I hear weird rapid and random clicking noises coming from, I think, the bottom of the boat. It's sort of the sound of pop rocks on your tongue or really loud champagne bubbles or of pop corn popping in the microwave (but not that ...

| Seeing | 28 Jan 2005 02:39 GMT | 5 |

I can't believe that "Navigating with grains of salt" thread I started is still going on. I feel like I'm in a Road Runner cartoon watching two little dust clouds vanish over the horizon. Do you think those guys will ever give up?

| Navigating with grains of salt | 27 Jan 2005 18:11 GMT | 144 |
The post about taking your charts with a grain of salt and using all available information brings up the conundrum I'm facing as I return to sailing after nearly 20 years. Most of my command time was in simple, traditional, boats. The most

| Starting batteries for 20 HP | 27 Jan 2005 03:20 GMT | 34 |
Is there any reason to consider using dual purpose or a one starting, one deep cycle set up with a 20 hp Yanmar diesel? I would think the starting loads on the small engine are low enough that two deep cycle batteries would do fine.
