| Use your charts with a grain of salt. | 27 Jan 2005 01:52 GMT | 52 |
http://www.goupstate.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050115/ZNYT02/501150360/10 51/NEWS01 Not that any of us will be cruising at 30 knots 500 feet below the surface but navigating soly by GPS you are just as blind. Many of the charts we use are from surveys over 100 years old.

Okay we are buying a boat. What I want to know is...well cars are manufactured by GM. Chrysler etc. Who manufacturers the boats and which names like Regal, Carver, SeaRay etc. are part of which group?

| Impeller pumps | 26 Jan 2005 13:03 GMT | 9 |
OK, here's where you old salts can set me straight. Visualize an impeller pump as being a T...with the vertical part of the T being replaced by a circle, i.e., the impeller. Now assume the arms of the the T are labeled IN/OUT (left) and OUT/IN.(right)

| Boat lift | 26 Jan 2005 11:31 GMT | 4 |
I'm looking for a hand (or electric as second choice) winch crane or hoist to mount along a bulkhead to lift a boat of perhaps 600 pounds from the water and swing it around to a dolly. I have in mind a mast and gaff like what you see mounted on a trawler. One could be designed and ...

| "Freshening" the Fresh Water Tanks | 26 Jan 2005 07:02 GMT | 2 |
I've been doing a long overdue cleaning of our two stainless steel fresh water tanks. All appears to be well with the tanks and I didn't find any nasty surprises when I opened them up. I've cleaned out the small amount of sediment that I found, and rinsed the tanks several times ...

| Advice about '68 Newport 30'? | 25 Jan 2005 18:12 GMT | 8 |
Hi, sorry to just drop in, but I think I can get a 1968 Newport 30' for under $7000. I grew up sailing my dad's Blanchard 33' in Kaneohe Bay, and between the HI islands, so I can sail, probably rusty, but anyway, assuming I get a survey and nothing terrible is wrong, the Atomic 4 ...

| Winter Storage and NOT Winterizing? | 25 Jan 2005 15:10 GMT | 1 |
In my search up here in the northern states for a Regal cruiser I've come across several parties that have their vessel in heated storage. They claim that they do not winterize their boat. Put aside the obvious risk of "What if you loose power and heat" ... what about the engine? ...

| caribe MVP engine size | 25 Jan 2005 14:56 GMT | 9 |
We have a 9' Caribe MVP with a 9.8 Tohatsu. With one person in the boat it moves very well but put a second person in it it really slows down. I bought the 9.8 because of the weight. I am told the 9.9. has more torque than the 9.8. Does anyone have a similar setup. Any suggestions ...

| Spare Prop. Wrong shaft size!$##%^&* | 24 Jan 2005 18:25 GMT | 9 |
I picked up a spare prop several years ago.. Just happened to be the recommended Dia./Pitch for my installation. The price was right.. I went to install it last summer and found that the bore was 1 1/8" while my shaft is 1 1/4" .. (I had made an incorrect assumption, since this ...

| Lubing Groco HF head | 24 Jan 2005 14:49 GMT | 10 |
Here is a question for Peggy, or anyone else who may have some direct experience with lubing a Groco HF head.... I would like to lube the pump in my Groco HF head with some Teflon grease. Unless I am mistaken, it appears that the pump will have to be removed

| Spectra, for luff pennants?? | 24 Jan 2005 06:23 GMT | 21 |
For many years I have used wire to make pennants to adjust the hoist on my head sails. To raise the tack/foot off the deck or clear the lifelines. Or on the head to raise the halyard swivel enough to prevent a "halyard wrap" on the roller furling...

| AC in the Bahamas | 23 Jan 2005 03:14 GMT | 20 |
Any thoughts on the need for Air Conditioning on a Sailing Vessel while in the Bahamas. Currently have them on board, but no Gen Set. Hate to put in a Gen Set if Air Conditioning is not needed.

| Urethane V Varnish | 23 Jan 2005 03:08 GMT | 9 |
Used Urethane to cover the sole of the yacht. Can it be used in other places in the interior (less UV than outside) or is varnish the only way to go.

Does anyone have any leads on good deals in boat insurance. My policy renewal premium is just about double. Must pay for the hurricanes I guess.
