Over on alt.binaries.e-book.technical is a repost of quite an extensive
emergency medical library you should store on your boat laptop you might
find useful.

Good laugh - must read30 Sep 2006 15:03 GMT1
This will only be posted briefly because it was written by a lawyer
James A. Quinby and I'm sensitive to copyright.  It contains such an
important safety message for those of use who deal with commercial
traffic in low visibility and is such a good laugh that I've got to
Where can I buy a house or flat with a boat slip on southern coast of England ?29 Sep 2006 10:20 GMT7
Actually I would like one in London by the River Thames but don't think
there's one for sale. I used to visit a friend with a house by the Thames
in Weybridge but don't know if I can sail a 40' catamaran that far.
Maybe a house on the Isle of Wight would be nice if it's not too dear ...
Anyone care to guess ?29 Sep 2006 04:01 GMT10
Recently purchased a 20 year old steel sloop. With it came a bunch of stuff
that the previous (second) owner had never used, indeed was blissfully
unaware of the intended purpose for most of it. As the months have gone by
I've managed to identify virtually everything but one item ...

Osmosis on topsides27 Sep 2006 18:56 GMT4
I viewed a 1983 Vancouver 32 recently that had osmotic blistering
covering about 4 feet of the topsides below the teak cap rail on both
port & starboard aft quarters.  There are no blisters or signs of
osmosis below the waterline.

"Lockpicking for the New Millenium"
and see how easy it is to open the front door to that $1.2M mansion with
the simplest of tools, even ones you can easily make with a file.....(c;
Rust spots cleaning26 Sep 2006 19:37 GMT11
Hi Sailors,
I just had my decks emroned with a sand mix for no-skid areas and the
boat look great, however when a worker drills metal somewhere the tiny
shavings blow onto the decks and ultimatly become these hard to clean
Homeland Security vs. Common Sense26 Sep 2006 16:26 GMT29
The following episode might be of interest to fellow boaters cruising the
San Juans and Canadian Gulf Islands....
We were returning from Bedwell Harbour on the Canadian side of the boundary
to our designated port of entry for U.S. customs at Roche Harbor - the
Heat exchanger, zinc questions25 Sep 2006 03:55 GMT6
I have a Westerbeke 4-107 in my new (to me) boat. Upon checking the
pencil zinc on the heat exchanger, I found that it was not screwed into
the cap, although I could see zinc sitting in the orifice. Either it
was coroded away in the cap, or was not screwed into the cap properly.

Radar question25 Sep 2006 02:12 GMT4
Just one of those questions that you suddenly wonder why you never
wondered about before:
How do all those radar's out there avoid interfering with each other?
Are they all on slightly different frequencies (that seems like a lot

Has anybody compared The CAPN by Nautical Technologies and Nobeltec's VNS
version 8 or 9? Any recommendations? Has anybody tested both Electronic
Charting systems?
New Old Boat!23 Sep 2006 19:09 GMT17
Some of you will remember that we have owned two
boats for over six years now.  When we bought our
Catalina 27 in 2000, we did not want to part ways
with our Maxum 21 powerboat, so we kept it.
