nmea - talkers - listeners and lessons learned.24 Jul 2008 18:23 GMT23
When I got my second nmea device, i was excited -- "hook it up" the manual said
-- support said "yes; you just hook up all the nmea out with nmea in of the
other devices and visa versa" so I did.
It appeared to work.  however, since I have some weird things recently
I lost a bunch of money!24 Jul 2008 14:20 GMT6
Oil prices dropped almost 20% this week. I believed all the doom and
gloomers and speculated they would continue to rise skyward and they didn't!

Does $150 a bbl sound likely?
I turned in my Captain's papers24 Jul 2008 03:05 GMT2
I have taken Wilbur Hubbards advice, put my Captain's papers in a big
brown envelope and sent them back to the Coast Guard. My actions,
especially my boasting and lack of foresight have shamed competent
captains the world over, and not just myself. I have come to realize
Ferro Cement boats24 Jul 2008 03:03 GMT24
My wife & I have been talking about moving onto a boat & sailing away for a long
time -- the biggest stumbling block to buying a boat the size we'd need for
liveaboard is $ -- we'd have to sell our house 1st & then buy the boat.
however, we happened upon a FC boat that we can afford ...

Radio Call Signs24 Jul 2008 02:10 GMT95
Are "Call Signs" ever used in VHF communications to/from/between boats? I
know they are part of the FCC radio license - but is they just a "leftover"
from land based radio stations?
Just curious...
What did you do today?23 Jul 2008 08:31 GMT30
Another wonderful day in Seattle. Got up at 0420 fiddled around and
got 2 shots espresso topped off with soy. Walked on the tracks by the
boat yard in Ballard. The city is quiet at 0500.
For the Deadliest Catch fans I walked over to the North Western it
It's laughable!!!23 Jul 2008 07:41 GMT3
If some of you would spend 1/10th the time sailing as you spent talking
about refrigeration and other systems having little or nothing to do with
sailing, you might actually become a sailor in less than a century.

Honda EU3000i explodes!....GIF at 1123 Jul 2008 07:39 GMT14
I swear it wasn't my fault!.....
I pulled my stepvan into a Sunoco station to refill the Honda EU3000i
electronic genset with gas.  The genset had been pulling the two 8000 Btu
Korean ACs for a few hours while I was on the road fixing things, so I
Trailerable sailboat question23 Jul 2008 07:37 GMT25
Please forgive me for asking a newbie question. I'm considering getting a
smallish (19'-23'), swing keel, water ballast, sailboat for family
recreation on local lakes. I don't know much about sailing but I've been a
power boat owner for 30 years. Big difference, I know, but bear ...

Proposed Discharge Permits23 Jul 2008 04:17 GMT27
New EPA water permit regulations are on the horizon. Some boaters fear this
could cause them to sink or simply take their boats out of the water
altogether.
On September 30th, the EPA is scheduled to begin court-ordered enforcement
What is an anchor for?23 Jul 2008 03:30 GMT28
To my way of thinking..an anchor is to secure a boat to the bottom of
the sea in such a way that it stays there as long as the crew of the
ship wants to be there. If the ship is dragging the anchor, proper
seamanship suggests that the gear be reset until it holds..anything
