Garmin GPS/Chartplotter31 Jul 2005 12:28 GMT6
I am thinking of getting the Garmin 172C - does anyone have experience
with this model?
It is about £410 in the UK
Thanks
Navman 5100 NMEA capability30 Jul 2005 00:40 GMT1
Anyone know if the 5100 can accept VHW (speed over water) and MTW (water
temp) on its NMEA input? The manual only talks about DPT from a sounder.
I thought I'd ask here as I'm waiting for a response from Navman (+17
hours from me in the NE USA).
Icom 802 and SGC Smarttuner29 Jul 2005 01:11 GMT2
Does anyone know if an Icom 802 SSB can be used with a SGC SG-30
smarttuner?
!2 Volt ground for trailable yacht28 Jul 2005 14:53 GMT5
I have recently downsized to a trailable yacht from a keelboat and I have to
re-do the electrical system ( old one doesn't work and is such a mess, I'm
starting from scratch). On my keelboat, all the negatives from batteries and
appliances( via a negative bus bar) were routed to ...
are aeronautical lorans compatible with boating?27 Jul 2005 20:08 GMT2
Are the aeronautical LORAN sets selling for little on Ebay useable on boats?
Just curious.  Some don't appear to have keypads for TD1/TD2 entry.  How is
this accomplished?  Do they also have LAT/LONG flip-flop capability?
Speaking of NMEA, is there a NMEA alarm monitor?22 Jul 2005 13:41 GMT46
Almost all GPSs have anchor watch alarms and radars have range alarms but
they all put out a whimpy little beep.  Is there a device that monitors the
NMEA data streams (from say a multiplexer) and make a noise that will get
your attention when it sees an alarm or MOB statement??
VHF channels in Granadine21 Jul 2005 22:24 GMT3
I'm italian and by the first days of august I'll be in the Grenadines
islands for sailing.
Here we do use VHF channels known as 'International channels'.. don't know
if in the Grenadines area I'll need USA Channels or International Channels.
Touchscreens again21 Jul 2005 15:56 GMT29
Thanks for the various inputs on Touchscreens.
Sorry to post again, but the original subject is rather old now, originally
posted on 8 July.
I have been in contact with various UK suppliers, and they all seem to think

Touchscreens18 Jul 2005 17:32 GMT4
I have recently tried a touchscreen on my navpod using it as a repeater for
my laptop for navigational purposes. Unfortunately it was a bit of a
disaster. Problems with steaming up, and poor brilliance and a lot of
reflections. It was fine at night or on a dull day, but who wants ...
Dimmer for instrument lights18 Jul 2005 03:31 GMT17
Anyone know what I need to buy to add a dimmer to my instrument lights?
I want to be able to control the intensity of my instrument lights. They are
not shielded and reflect on the windshield, making it impossible to sit and
look through the windshield. We have to stand while at ...
Panama Canal requires AIS in all vessels18 Jul 2005 02:46 GMT18
Here's some AIS information for anyone thinking of using the Panama Canal I
thought you'd like to know.  I'm for AIS on all vessels 100%.  It should be
expanded and replace the stupid GMDSS/DSC abortions.
"PANAMA CANAL NOW REQUIRES AIS NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT
Charging circuit, 200Merc Help17 Jul 2005 11:11 GMT2
Can someone tell me how to check whether my charging circuit is working on
this old Merc?  I ran a little test on the rectifier which indicated it was
bad and have just replaced it.  Now, if I check voltage across one of the
batteries, with engine off, it measured 12.3 volts.  With ...
Gyrocompass and inclinometer17 Jul 2005 01:17 GMT1
I have an obsolete KVH Tracphone antenna AU900A that has an integral
gyrocompass and inclinometer. The servos and gearing would make a great
land-based positioning device. I would also like to experiment with the
internal gyrocompass and inclinometer. KVH tech support will only tell ...
